Watch Birds Up Close With Our New Wire-Free Bird Box Camera SystemΒ
We’re excited to announce that we have developed the world’s first ever completely wire-free WiFi Bird Box Camera System! If you don’t like messing around with wires and cables, you’re in the right place.Β

A bird box camera lets you watch nesting birds up close, live and in HD, straight from your phone or tablet – without ever disturbing the nest. If you love garden birds, it turns an ordinary nest box into a window onto one of nature's most fascinating events: courtship, nest-building, eggs hatching and chicks fledging, all streamed to your sofa.

Short answer: A bird box camera is a small camera fitted inside a nest box that streams video and audio over WiFi to an app, so you can watch nesting birds 24/7. Wire-free, solar-powered models run all season without cables; wired (PoE) models trade convenience for a rock-solid connection.

After 20 years pioneering and perfecting bird box camera systems, we offer two market-leading options that hit the sweet spot for every birding enthusiast – whether you want a completely wire-free setup or a hard-wired connection that never drops. Here's how a WiFi bird box camera works, how to choose between solar and wired, and how to install one for the best possible view.

What Is a WiFi Bird Box Camera and How Does It Work?

A WiFi bird box camera is a compact camera built into (or fitted inside) a bird nesting box. It points down at the nesting chamber and connects to your home WiFi, sending a live video and audio feed to an app on your phone or tablet. From there you can watch in real time, record clips, and get instant alerts when there's activity in the box.

The clever part is that the camera works in the dark. A built-in light sensor switches on night-vision infrared LEDs after dusk, so you get crisp black-and-white footage of birds settling down for the night or feeding chicks before dawn – all without any disturbing visible light. A pre-focused lens gives a clean top-down view of the nest, and a built-in microphone captures the chirping and song that make bird watching so rewarding.

Wire-Free Solar Bird Box Camera vs Wired (PoE)

The biggest decision when choosing a bird box camera is how it's powered and connected. There are two main approaches, and the right one depends on how far your nest box sits from power and your router.

Solar-Powered, Wire-Free Bird Box Camera

If you don't like messing around with wires and cables, a wire-free WiFi bird box camera is the easiest way in. Our Solar Powered Battery WiFi Bird Box Camera gives you 24/7, uninterrupted close-up HD views and audio of nesting birds, and can last a whole nesting season without ever being plugged in.

You no longer have to worry about placing your bird box camera near a mains supply. A high-efficiency solar panel with its own integrated lithium-ion battery pack keeps the camera charged, even on the cloudiest days. On the rare occasion the battery does run low, you can simply detach the pack and charge it indoors. The camera also has 32GB of internal memory, enough to record up to 80 hours of footage of your nesting birds.

Wired Bird Box Camera with PoE Extension

The alternative to going solar is our WiFi Bird Box Camera with PoE Extension. As well as connecting to WiFi, this camera can also be used out of WiFi range using an optional CAT5e Ethernet cable (up to 100m) that runs back to your router. With a Power over Ethernet (PoE) adapter, that single cable can also power the camera – a robust solution that doesn't rely on WiFi signal or a power socket near the bird box. The cables are weatherproof, and the system includes a mounting bracket to make installation easier. A MicroSD card can be added to record footage of your nesting birds. (A PoE kit will need to be set up with a WiFi network initially – please contact us for more information.)

Image Quality, Night Vision and Sound

Both cameras are built to capture everything your nesting birds get up to, live or recorded. Our solar battery WiFi camera and standard WiFi camera use 3.0 and 4.0 megapixel sensors respectively to deliver Full HD colour images – sharp enough to pick out the smallest markings on an egg, even in low light.

We've thought of every detail to make the nesting season as enjoyable as possible. The camera is paired with a pre-focused lens for a perfect top-down view of the nesting chamber, holding sharp HD images without distortion. A light sensor and night-vision infrared LEDs then produce crystal-clear black-and-white video in total darkness, so you never miss the overnight action.

You won't miss the daytime moments either: motion detection can send instant alerts to your phone the moment a bird starts nesting, and triggers recording so you can watch it back later in the Nestera app. And because birding isn't birding without bird song, a built-in microphone captures the chirping and calls to go with those crisp moving images.

Share the View With Family and Friends

Here at Nestera, we're all about sharing the delight of bird watching. With our safe and secure app, you can share your camera's feed directly from your phone or tablet with family and friends, wherever they are in the world – perfect for getting children excited about wildlife or keeping grandparents in on the action.

Being animal welfare advocates, we put birds' wellbeing at the heart of everything we do, so our bird boxes are made from responsibly sourced Western Red Cedar. The natural oils in the cedar mean the box never needs treating or painting. Translucent windows give the camera optimum light levels without letting predators see in, while a removable front panel makes cleaning the box quick and easy between seasons.

Our bird box designs follow guidelines suggested by the RSPB and BTO, and are recommended by wildlife organisations including the British Trust for Ornithology and The Wildlife Trusts. Our bird box camera systems have also featured on the BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning wildlife series Frozen Planet, as well as BBC's Springwatch and Autumnwatch and ITV's Love Your Garden.

How and Where to Install a Bird Box Camera

Getting the location right makes all the difference to whether birds move in – and to the quality of your footage. A few simple rules go a long way:

  • Height: Mount the box 2–4 metres up, out of easy reach of cats and other predators.
  • Aspect: Face the entrance between north and east to shelter it from the strongest sun and the prevailing wind and rain.
  • Clear flight path: Leave the entrance unobstructed so birds can come and go freely, with a nearby perch or branch.
  • Quiet spot: Choose a calm, undisturbed part of the garden, away from busy doors, feeders and foot traffic.
  • Signal and charge: Check WiFi reaches the box, and for solar models, make sure the panel catches enough daylight to keep topped up.

It's best to put the box up in autumn or winter so birds can find it and get used to it well before the breeding season. For more detail, see our guide on where is the best place to put my bird box.

Which Birds Might You See?

The species you attract depends largely on your entrance-hole size and location. A 25–28mm hole suits blue tits, great tits and coal tits, while a slightly larger 32mm hole opens the door to house sparrows and nuthatches. Robins and wrens often prefer open-fronted boxes. Once a pair moves in, your camera lets you follow the whole story – nest-building, egg-laying, incubation, hatching and those frantic feeding runs – right through to fledging. To plan ahead, take a look at the birds that will visit your bird box this season.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a bird box camera work?

A small camera inside the nest box points down at the nesting chamber and connects to your home WiFi. It streams live video and audio to an app on your phone or tablet, records footage, and can send motion alerts. After dark, infrared LEDs switch on automatically so you still get clear night-vision footage.

Do you need WiFi for a bird box camera?

Most modern bird box cameras use WiFi so you can watch the feed on your phone. If the box is out of WiFi range, a wired PoE model can run a single Ethernet cable (up to 100m) back to your router for both data and power. Solar models stay wire-free for power but still use WiFi for the live feed.

Will a camera disturb nesting birds?

No. The camera sits quietly inside the box and uses infrared night vision rather than visible light, so it doesn't disturb the birds. The key is to install the box and camera well before the breeding season – ideally in autumn or winter – and then leave it undisturbed once birds show interest.

When should I put up a bird box camera?

Autumn or winter is ideal. Putting the box up months ahead gives birds time to find it and feel secure before they choose a nesting site in spring, and it lets you test the camera, WiFi signal and (for solar models) charging before the action begins.
